The Director in this role will support the sustainability strategy for Graham and develop goals, policies and programs to promote efficient, cost effective technologies and operations at all levels of the Company with the objective of being environmentally and socially responsible and economically viable. 

Along with other senior management, he/she will support the sustainability strategy as appropriate to Graham’s business keeping in mind the expectations of our customers, our end consumers and society in general.  The incumbent will be a leader in the effort to fulfill Graham’s commitment to sustainability as a key business strategy.

  • Develop and execute a plan to identify the environmental impact of the Company’s global operations, create sustainability initiatives and recommend methods for driving energy efficiency in all areas of the business.
  • Measure and report on the Company’s global performance against its goals and strategies with respect to sustainability and ensure the implementation of management systems necessary to support sustainability programs.
  • Represent the Company globally as required on this issue in high visibility leadership events with our customers, industry groups and the public.





Proactive Leadership:  Support the Company’s efforts to develop a position in sustainability appropriate for Graham and a long-term strategy for sustainability efforts within the Company.  Serve as the ESG/Sustainability subject matter expert to facilitate reporting, metrics and submit annual reports for rating agencies. Advise the Company’s management on best practices with respect to sustainability. Monitor and analyze the strategies, policies and programs of other companies with particular attention to the plastic packaging industry


Business Partnership and Integration:   Support the Sales and Marketing teams by preparing or supporting the development of internal and external sustainability communications including annual Sustainability Report, sales sheets, brochures, presentations, advertisements, social media and websites.  Manage the sustainability collateral development and updating of information to the Graham internet and intranet and for our customers, prospective employees and consumers.  Educate and link different groups and functions.  Be a change agent in the organization by creating awareness of the program’s key objectives.


Data Collection and Presentation: Coordinate company-wide data collection related to sustainability and environmental performance (in accordance with GRI standards). Use data to develop metrics, track against goals, and respond to internal and external questions or requests for data.  Support the Marketing team in the development of the annual Sustainability Report and other customer driven reports as needed.  Develop company-wide relationships including a detailed understanding of our processes to maintain data on sustainability.  Manage internal and external customer requests for sustainability related information. This requires working with legal and other departments to complete customer questionnaires, write letters and provide data as necessary.               


Regulatory:   Keep up-to-date and communicate sustainability legislative developments which affect packaging.


Project Identification and Management:  Using both internal and external resources, identify opportunities and projects that will allow us to improve our global sustainability position.  Incumbent will lead and serve on project teams as well as manage outsourced projects at vendors and/or universities/institutions.  Will see that sustainability related programs are properly executed to insure that the mission is maximized and resources are used effectively and efficiently.


Best Practices:  Advise the Company’s management on best practices with respect to sustainability.  Monitor and analyze the strategies, policies and programs of other companies with particular attention to the plastic packaging industry.


Risk/Benefit Analysis:  Partner with our Marketing and Development teams to assess the opportunities and risks with respect to sustainability strategies.  Elevate emerging strategies where appropriate.


Industry Partnerships:  Build strategic alliances and coalitions with key constituency groups (local, national and international in the political, social and environmental arena) whose work and missions are aligned with our priorities. 


Communication: Support the Marketing team in the creation of Graham’s sustainability communication strategy.  Advance the Company’s reputation of sustainability within and outside the Company.  Represent the Company as required in high profile situations. 


Seminars and Industry Workshops:  Attendance at functions with the objective of both learning and influencing the packaging industry on sustainability issues.

Management presentations and updates. Position will regularly meet with senior management to obtain project approvals and to communicate updates. 

Budget Oversight:  Develop an understanding of the fiscal impact of the Company’s goals in terms of project expenditures and potential financial benefits.

Travel:  Approximately 25-30%  


Professional Experience

  • Experience in a corporate sustainability-related role, preferably implementing a sustainability program, achieving sustainability targets, creating reporting/metrics, or facilitating the achievement of corporate accreditations/ certifications.
  • Knowledge of industrial energy efficiency, corporate social responsibility reporting, environmental management, product life cycle assessment, and design for Sustainability.
  • Extensive knowledge of global sustainability trends and ability to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Experienced in performing, analyzing, and presenting lifecycle assessments (LCAs).
  • Extensive project management experience with a focus on conceptualization and implementation of scalable sustainability projects that cover optimization project in operations, and leading cross-functional sustainability projects focused on products and packaging.
  • Broad experience with external stakeholder communication, including knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks including, but not limited to, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), APR, How2Recycle, Ellen Macarthur Foundation (EMF) etc.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental sciences, sustainability or related subject area.
  • At least 10-15 years of relevant professional experience in a sustainability or similar role in the private sector or consulting firm with extensive experience in factory sustainability projects both at internal owned locations as well as source finished good suppliers
  • Lean / Six Sigma and firsthand experience around waste reduction projects
  • In-depth knowledge of sustainability concepts to include energy and waste management
  • Certifications in Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) with extensive experience in preparing Sustainability reports
  • Proven ability to independently manage complex projects and brief senior leadership
  • Excellent grasp of sustainability concepts as well as emerging trends with ability to apply this knowledge to support sustainability projects
  • Familiarity with academic, government and Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in the sustainability arena
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Microsoft office suite
  • In-depth knowledge and experience using key performance indicator tracking tools for resource usage
  • Motivated, team player who is a true multi-tasker
